Week of June 12, 2002

Owen has been teething for the last week or two. He's so good natured most of the time that it really throws us off when suddenly he's clutchy or tearful or unhappy. He smiles in between, thank goodness, but I hate seeing him unhappy. His teeth seem to be slow to come in, and cause him more pain a month or two ahead than they do when he actually gets them. We can't even figure out which teeth are bothering him, since the finger in his mouth rotates from place to place. His big accomplishment this week is standing with his feet and hands on the floor, his back an arch. He likes to look through his legs with his head upside down. Is this the pre-cursor to standing?

Food blather.
He's been disinterested in food in lately, and for a few days was living on milk and breakfast. He was home having lunch with us on Wednesday and was willing to eat some bits of Harvest Stew. I wish we ate dinner together more often, I think it's such a help to have him see what we're eating. Things look more appealing on our plates. He was interested in seeing us eat with a spoon, and was willing to let us feed him a few things from it. He's so used to feeding himself, that I've been wondering if we'll ever have luck using utensils.

Book blather.
He loves his books. We rotate between Dear Zoo, Neighborhood Animals and the Big Red Barn. Sometimes we can sneak in Skip to My Lou, Barnyard Dance or Pajama Time. What surprises me is how often Scott and I can read these stories and still not have them memorized. How did people memorize the Odyssey, the Iliad or the Bible? I can barely remember "Is Your Mama a Llama?"

Since the sleeping patterns have been disrupted, we've all been dragging. No matter how restless the night before, Owen likes to be up by 5 at the latest. 4 or 4:30 would be better for him, he's up even before the birds. I can see how people become bakers, it's kind of pleasant to get a jump on the world each day. The bad part is being ready to call it quits by 8. Scott and I have been falling asleep to Thomas the Tank Engine on the television. We've been waiting all week for Friday to come, and have uninterrupted time together.
