Supreeth Shastri

Hello! I'm a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas Austin hosted by Prof. Vijay Chidambaram. My work focuses on the analysis, design, and development of experimental system software. In 2018, I graduated with a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, advised by Prof. David Irwin. My doctoral research was at the intersection of cloud computing, operating systems and economics. Previously, I got dual MS degrees from the Columbia University working with Prof. Henning Schulzrinne, and spent eight years building software systems at Cisco, Philips Research, NEC Labs, ARM, Ittiam, Infosys, and Raman Research Institute.

Outside of my work, I read and listen to books, play tennis, and together with my infinitely patient wife, I cherish parenting our lovely 9-year old boy, Sam.


The core theme of my doctoral research is risk management in cloud computing. While cloud platforms sell computing to applications for a price, they expose applications to a number of implicit risks by precisely defining and controlling the service-level characteristics of cloud servers. My research aims to identify these risks, quantify their costs, and explicitly manage them for cloud applications. Towards that goal, I adopt and extend concepts from finance and economics to propose a new system design approach called financializing cloud computing . By treating cloud resources as investments and by quantifying the cost of their risks, financialization enables system software to manage the risk-reward trade-offs, explicitly and autonomously. I demonstrate this via four projects:
