and Beroul relied on their audiences to understand Christian
symbolism (while the Vulgate authors explained these symbols
explicitly),
and the Mabinogion relied on one's knowledge
of Celtic myth. Does Malory rely on any such body of knowlege?
If so, what? If not, and these tales are neither mythic
nor religious, then what are they?
