Once upon a time, people had elaborate manners. People of a certain rank in all cultures practiced formal rituals of greeting, of conversation, of wooing, of parting, and so forth. What role might these rituals play in ensuring peace and prosperity in a civilization? In the world of Beowulf? And how does the tone and syntax of the poem alert us to ritualized language and behavior?
