Resources for research in Renaissance and early modern European history

Online databases

Most of these are available through http://www.library.umass.edu/ndl/view/. There are more (see the full list). If you are off campus, they require your UMAccess userid and password. Some require separate userids and passwords. Just to make research challenging, each database has its own interface.

• Google: specifically, to see whether someone has already compiled a bibliography that could serve as a starting point.
• WorldCat (union catalogue of books and media in world libraries)
• Historical Abstracts. Note the starting date of the collection.

• MLA International Bibliography - literary aspects
• International Medieval Bibliography (for medieval precursors or comparative studies)

• Web of Science (general search and cited reference search; includes Arts and Humanities Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index)
• RLG Eureka database (requires ID and password; UMass does not have a subscription) - History of Science and Technology
• ITER: Gateway to the Middle Ages and Renaissance
• ATLA Religion Database
• Expanded Academic ASAP
• Academic Search Premier
• Clio-online: Fachportal für die Geschichtswissenschaften
• Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikon (used to be free; now requires payment)
• JSTOR - online article archive for many major journals; recent issues excluded. Recently expanded to include books and links to recent material on publishers' sites.
