M.J. Alhabeeb was born in Iraq in 1954. In addition to his career as a professor of resource economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he has been practicing painting and classic calligraphy for more than 30 years. He has had five solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in the past.

He has had a long working experience in graphic design departments of commercial advertising firms and national publications. He has designed and illustrated numerous magazines and newspapers, books, logos, posters and calendars. He was a three-time winner in national contests to design postal stamps. He occasionally offers summer classes of calligraphy for the local community. He is an American citizen, and has resided in the U.S. since 1982. He lives with his wife and two children in Belchertown, MA.
