Introduction  [page 1]

The purpose of this studio, Furnishing the Urban Landscape, is to focus on design development skills. This is the stage of the design process that follows conceptual design and is intended to acquaint you with professional practice aspects of urban design projects. Specifically, you will be required to prepare detailed design development drawings using CAD and prepare cost estimates for selected street improvements, and other pedestrian and vehicular landscape elements.

In this studio, we will be working on four projects in downtown Boston that are currently being designed by The Halvorson Company. The overall project involves the design and linkage of these four adjacent spaces. The first and most significant space is the redesign of Christopher Columbus Park (across from Quincy Market).

The second is the section of the Central Artery project which lies beteween Quincy Market and Christopher Columbus Park, which you are all familiar with from last year.

The third site is the entrance to the New England Aquarium which is located on Long Wharf and also provides views to the waterfront.

The fourth "space" is really a corridor. You will work to create a waterfront walk bewteen the NE Aquarium and Christopher Columbus Park going out and around Long Wharf.
