Grant Wilson

I am a Professor in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in Astronomy and my research focuses on making novel observations of the millimeter sky to advance our understanding of the obscurred universe.

Outside Astronomy I am very interested in advanced computational techniques, pedagogical techniques, and the philosophy of scientific inquiry. I think about all of these things in terms of modeling with a strong emphasis on how noise and uncertainty influences our thinking. Eventually I would like to write a popular book on these topics but for the moment I have other things I am focussing on.

As of September, 2016 I spend all my research efforts on leading a new effort called the TolTEC Project. This is a transformative new camera that will allow us to map the millimeter sky at rates of around 100 times what is currently possible. TolTEC will provide a new view of the dust-enshrouded universe over all cosmic times.
