Spanish
is the second most spoken language in the United States, and the Hispanic population
is the biggest minority group in the country. There are also important
communities of Portuguese speakers in New England, mainly in Rhode Island and
Massachusetts. Therefore, to study these languages in contact with English
is, at the same time, a challenging and exciting task. I am
very thankful to the Digital Humanities Initiative of the
College of Humanities and Fine Arts for giving me the opportunity to start a
project that documents the linguistic varieties
of the Spanish and Portuguese spoken in the area. The New England Corpus of Heritage and Second Language
Speakers collects data from immigrants and heritage
speakers of Spanish and Portuguese who live in New England. |
