Structure of Green Map

The proposal green map is based on the existing river and road corridor which were once limited in public accessibility. Now, after hundred years of urbanization, this corridor provides more possibility to change to green infrastructure considering their linear space and interaction with their neighborhoods. The planning Board in Shanghai Municipal Government (SHGHJ) also begin to put more green patterns to wide these corridors and link more open places ino a system while still respecting to the existing urban fabric.

Basic Structure: "1+2+3" :

Green Structure Map

  • One north to south corridor: Huangpu River . Huangpu river cuts Shanghai into two parts: West Shanghai (Pu-Xi), a traditional district which is more than 200 years old and East Shanghai (Pu-Dong), which is a very new and modern district since 1992. In downtown area, the north parts this corridor is already open to public. Recreation, tourism, commercial are typical land use which are very successful.

The remaining parts in south meet the great opportunity because of the Expo 2010, Shanghai . These typical post-industry areas is proposed to increase the amenities in waterfront area as a public corridor.

Suzhou River as a Blue Corridor

  • Two east to west corridors: East Suzhou River and Yan'an Highway .
East Suzhou River waterfront areas are becoming the residential areas with the highest density in Shaghai from the brown field. Currently, most of the the river bank is closed to public and just for private use. The green map will open all river banks for public use and one living water park, Menqing Park , is under construction.Yan'an highway is one of the most traffic roads in Shanghai . Pedestrian and bicycle use will be encouraged in this future green corridor along the highway and cross the highway while private mobile use will be limited

Outer Circle with Big Green Patterns
Inner Cicle with Small Green Patterns
  • Three circles: outer circle highway, middle circle highway and water circle.More urban forests are planned to merge into Shanghai downtown area from outer highway. These big green patterns will reduce the heating island effectively and provide a rural place for public use. The middle highway green system is the combination of small green patterns like street parks and community open spaces. The water circle is the blue necklace for Shanghai and more places with ecological value will provides a living place for wildlife and the recreation places for urban people.
