Conversion of Lignocellulose to Liquid Fuel

Conversion of vegetation to fuels often starts with either the edible oils sugars from plants. Starting with lignen or cellulose has the advantage of not competing with the human food supply. Material such as sawdust is converted to green aromatics in a fluidized bed reactor such as that simulated below, and then the green aromatics are refined much as petroleum is. This work is funded by the National Science Foundation.
