Computers and Simulations

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is a research tool in which the equations of classical physics are solved numerically without models.  Orszag and Patterson computed the first DNS of turbulence in 1972.  They used 32,768 grid points on a CDC-6600 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research

Our research simulations use about 1 trillion grid points and each snapshot in time is 10 TB. A slice through the simulated flow field is so well resolved that it cannot be viewed at full resolution on a typical computer screen. These simulations run on thousands of CPU cores on computers including the Cray XE6 and the SGI Altrix ICE provided by the High Performance Computing Modernization Program
