A personal statment from the webmaster...

I am a graduating senior at the University of Massachusetts. I have a
major in Community Organizing through the
University Without Walls,
a minor in
Computer Science, and a concentration in Technical
Communication
.

I currently work as a student employee at the OIT Help Desk, as a Help
Desk Consultant. As a student employee I have distinguished myself from
among my peers as a reliable and trustworthy employee, and have been
entrusted with an unusually high level of responsibility. In this
capacity I consult with members of the UMass community on computing
issues on many different aspects of computer use, including web page
setup, printing problems, file recovery, host and desktop applications,
email, and, most frequently, PPP and ethernet Internet connectivity. I
have also had the opportunity to participate in a special project in
which I worked with other team members to automate our host-based
approach to email consulting, and channel all email communication between
clients and OIT staff through the REMEDY database system, which is used
to track all of our other consulting activities.

While this is my first technological position, I have many years of
reliable work experience in other fields, through which I have
demonstrated a distinct ability to provide the highest level of service
to clients and customers, while competently advancing the interests of my
employers. This experience includes work in the culinary field, real
estate sales, and massage therapy, all of which involved some type of
customer service. Along the way, it has always been my practice to work
to improve my level of skill and knowledge.

My course work at the University has provided me with a broad knowledge
base in computer operation. Some pertinent courses include
Networking,
Computer Architecture, Advanced Programming Techniques and. Debugging and
Consulting. I am presently completing the
Professional Writing and Technical
Communication
program in the UMass English department concentrating on
technical writing and user documentation. Through this program I have learned
the use of industry standard tools for communicating technical information in
writing, including Adobe FrameMaker, RoboHELP and RoboHTML. In
addition to my coursework, I have spent many hours studying computer hardware,
and several programming languages not taught in my classes.
