1 The World-Wide Web provides a collection of documents on many subjects. They can contain text, pictures, and sound. WWW is a networked hypermedia system. Hypermedia allows words or images in a document to serve as gateways to other, related documents.

2This publication can be downloaded by anonymous FTP. Directions are available through the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis. Through WWW, it can be reached at ftp://ftp.ucdavis.edu/pub. The file name is either Tcenter.exe (for an ASCII file) or TcnterWP.exe (for a WordPerfect file). Both files are self-exploding compressed files, that can be uncompressed by typing the file name at a DOS prompt.

3The TeleConX BBS can be dialed directly at through FedWorld at 703-321-8020 (parity NONE, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit) or on the Internet by using telnet to go to fedworld.gov. At FedWorld give the command "/go gateway" and then the command "d56" to get to TeleConX.

4 A Local Area Network (LAN) links computers in a small geographic area, such as an office, a building, or a campus. A Wide Area Network (WAN) links computers in distant geographic locations. A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) links LANs and WANs located or partially located in a geographic region. While LANs and WANs tend to link similar kinds of users, MANs link diverse networks.
