Comm-Dis 416 Introduction to Clinical
Procedures
Syllabus & Lectures
The objectives of this course are to provide a
substantive overview of professional, ethical, diagnostic, and
treatment procedures in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
Objectives include: (1) to understand professional and ethical
issues and organizational systems that legislate the clinical
practice in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology; (2) to
understand philosophical, pragmatic and multicultural issues
affecting the assessment process; (3) to become versed in formal and
informal diagnostic procedures to assess speech and language
abilities in children and to a lesser degree adults; (4) to apply
relevant clinical findings to aid in the differential diagnosis of
speech, language and hearing disorders; (5) to devise a logical
treatment plan given the need for remediation; and (6) to
demonstrate diagnostic report writing skills.
Comm-Dis 530 Neurological Bases of
Speech, Language and Hearing
Syllabus & Lectures
The objectives of
this course are: 1) to provide a substantive overview of the
neuroanatomical and neurophysiological mechanisms underlying speech,
phonation, cognitive-linguistic, and auditory processes; 2) to introduce
students to various theoretical concepts and clinical practices
utilized to differentially diagnose neurologically based
communication disorders; and 3) to enhance critical thinking skills
by applying clinical data or behavioral symptomatology to underlying
neurological substrates and neuro-physiological mechanisms.
Comm-Dis 612 Voice and Voice Disorders
Syllabus & Lectures
The objectives of this course are: 1) to
provide a substantive overview of the anatomical, physiological,
psychological, and neurological mechanisms underlying voice
production in humans; 2) to expose students to the procedures for
differentially diagnosing voice problems and clinical voice
disorders in child and adult populations; and 3) to acquaint
students with appropriate and logical intervention practices to manage particular voice disorders or voice problems; 4) to address evidence based practices to manage voice disorders; 5) to expose students to
various subjective and objective measurements and instruments to assess clinical
voice disorders; 6) to enhance critical thinking skills needed to assess and manage voiced disorders using a problem-based learning model..
ComDis 624 Motor
Speech Disorders
Syllabus & Lectures
The objectives of this course
are: 1) to provide a substantive overview of acquired and developmental motor speech disorders in adult and child populations; 2)
to introduce students to various theoretical concepts and clinical
practices to differentially diagnose motor-speech disorders;
3) to tease-out and identify the acoustic perceptual and motor speech features associated with dysarthria and apraxia of speech; 4) to differentiate motor speech disorders, such as dysarthria and apraxia of speech, from aphasia, other cognitive-linguistic problems as well as other neurological and non-organic communication disorders on the basis of etiology, neuroanatomical substrates, associated signs and symptoms, and distinguishing acoustic and motor speech characteristics; 5) to address intervention practices to manage motor speech disorders in
children and adults; and 6) to enhance critical thinking skills
using a problem-based learning model.
