The pace of life at the backdoors of downtown Northampton is slower and more utilitarian than on its dressed-up sidewalks. It's where we park our cars, or take a shortcut between errands. Change is slower than out on Main Street. History is preserved in bricked-up windows and signs for businesses long closed. If you knew Northampton 20 years ago and saw it now, you wouldn't recognize Main Street, but the backside would seem familiar.

Epson ultrachrome archival inks on Hahnemuhle photo rag paper, 18 x 24 inches each. Commissioned by the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, MA, for the exhibit "Picturing Northampton," 2004.
