THEATR 360 Scenic Design—Syllabus

Theater 360 follows a logical method demanding your participation in a series of assignments, a step-by-step path towards the completion of scenic designs. In the following pages, you will find a description of that process. For more information, please visit the course Web site for Theater 360.

Course Objectives:

  • To focus on theatre as a visual medium.
  • To learn a methodology for creating visual metaphor by analyzing a dramatic text.
  • To apply visual research, knowledge of history and technology to the creation of a scenic environment.
  • To learn basic design and presentation skills.

Grading:

Grades will be posted one week after each assignment is due. If you wish to discuss any grade, please contact me before or after class. The criteria for grading in this class are identical to the criteria for any work in the theater. Standards of originality and craftsmanship, and the timely delivery of work according to the specifications given or agreed upon by the creative team are all essential. Originality:

  • The ability to draw on your research to support your personal point of view.
  • The ability to present visual images that communicate the dramatic essence of the text.

Craftsmanship:

  • The degree of neatness and quality of presentation i.e. regard for your audience.
  • The ability to work to someone else’s specifications.

Timeliness:

  • The ability to meet deadlines. Points will be deducted for late delivery of projects.

Class Participation:

  • The ability to work in groups as a team member.
  • Demonstrating respect for and providing support to the rest of the class.

Attendance:

  • As per UMass policy, three unexcused absences are acceptable.
  • Each unexcused absence will result in a decrease of 5% of final grade.
