Here’s To You Rachel Robinson

By Judy Blume

I chose "Here’s to you Rachel Robinson" for the book discussion because it is my daughters favorite book. It got her through her Junior High and Senior High school years. If there was ever a book that a person used for bibliotherapy this was it! She actually went through three physical copies of it. She had memorized dialogue and passages from the book.

Rachel was a gifted person and she worked hard in her studies. Her mother was a lawyer who was appointed a judgeship. Her father was a high school teacher who had bouts of depression. Charles was her older brother and had just been thrown out of private school and was coming home. All her older sister, Jessica, could think about was dating and boys. The dynamics of the household were changing.

Rachel struggles with her talent and her family dynamics with the help of her two friends. The Language is clear and the relationships are real. Judy Blume has never steered away from difficult subjects.

It is an excellent book and would fit well in the family dynamics discussion of gifted children.
