Answer each of the following questions for an operating system such as MS DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 2000 or a version of Mac OS. Many of the operations can be performed using different methods. If there are several ways to perform an operation, describe at least three possible ways but no more than three. Indicate the type of operating system that you are using and the version number.

Bring two copies of your answers to this assignment to the class meeting on May 31, 2001. One copy will be handed in to your instructor. You will be given time to discuss the assignment with other people in the class who have used the same version of the operating system you use. Using the results of your discussion, you may change any of your answers to this assignment when you post it on your personal website.

1. How do you format or initialize a disk?

    A. Put the disk into the A:\Drive. Go to My Computer on the Desktop and double click MY Computer. Right /Click on the A:\Drive. The prompt will show up to format disk. Highlight Format. The Format Window will appear. Click on the Start Button. Choose Quick or Full. Watch the disk get formatted.

    B. Put the disk into the A:\Drive. Go to My Computer on the Desktop and double click My Computer. Pull down the File drop down menu. Select Format. The prompt will show up to format disk. Highlight Format. The Format Window will appear. Click on the Start Button. Choose Quick or Full. Watch the disk get formatted. Menu.

    C. Click Start. Point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click MS_DOS Prompt. Key in: “Format a:“. The “Insert new diskette for drive a: “prompt will Appear. “and press ENTER when ready . . . . “ appears. Insert the disk into Drive A: and hit ENTER. :Checking existing disk format“ appears and watch ift verify 1.44M percentage completed take place. :Format Complete.” Appears when the disk is finished being formatted. Then “Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for non)?” Prompt appears. Hit ENTER. :Format another (Y/N)?” prompt appears. Key in "N" if done formatting disks. DOS Format:A:\ The DOS Command is FORMAT is: drive:[./V[:label] allows you to add a volumne.

2. How do you find out what files are on a disk?

    A. Go to My Computer on the Desktop. Click A:\Drive or whatever drive you are looking for (ex. D:\). Go to File on the menu tool bar. Open the drop down menu. Click on Search. The Search Results Window will show up. Click on Search for Files or folders name of Text Containing text bos. Choose Look In: File. A: You can click on the down arrow. Type in the file you are looking for. At the bottom of the window it tells you the number of objects, file or folders found.

    B. Go the Start Menu, Click on Programs then Accessories and Eindows Explorer. You will get the My Documents folder. Right Click on the drive or folder you want to search and click on the Search portion of the Short cut menu. You will get the Search Results window.

    C. Click start button and choose Search Find file or folder. You will get the Search Results Window. Fill in as above in A.

3. How do you copy a file?

    A. The task is to copy dos.doc from the Desktop. Right click on the file dos.doc. The short cut menu will give you the Copy Option. Highlight it. Go to the A: Drive in My computer. Right Click on the A: DRive. The drop down menu will give you the Paste option. The file is pasted onto the A: Drive disk. Your new copy of dos.doc is there.

    B. Go to the Windows Explorer. Go to the Folder and File you want to copy by clicking on the folder and the File. Right Click on the File and choose Copy. Go to the folder you want to copy it to (Desktop). Highlight the folder you want to copy it to. Go to the Edit menu on the Tool Bar. Choose Paste. You have your new copy of the file on the desktop.

    C.Go to a File and Open it. Choose Select All on the Edit option on the menu tool bar. Once it is open go to the Edit menu. Click the Select All. CTL-C to copy the text. Create a new file like in Word or Notepad. Use CTL-V to insert it into the new Document. CTL-C is to Cut the data. Then do a SAVE AS and use a different name to save it under.

4. How do you copy a disk?

    A. Copy *.* from A:\ at the DOS prompt.

    B. Take a folder of files - create a new folder and in Internet Explorer drag the old folder to the new folder and watch as the files are automatically copied one by one to the new folder.

    C. To copy a floppy make sure the new disk is formatted and is the same size as the original. Insert the original disk into the floppy drive. Open my computer folder, right click on the floppy drive icon (normally a:) and choose copy disk. Follow the prompts in copy disk dialog box to complete the copy. If there is only one drive you must put the original back in the disk drive, copy it, take it out put the new disk in the same drive to finish copying it.

5. How do you rename a file?

    A. Right click on the file. Choose rename from the pulldown menu. It will highlight the name. Key in the new name.

    B. Select the icon that you want to rename. Right Click on it. The Name is now available for editing.

    C. Press the F2 key on the file you want to rename. The name will highlight and you can edit the name.

6. How do you delete a file from a disk?

    A. Click on the file. Hit the delete key. Answer "Yes" to the "Do you really want to delete this file" prompt and watch it disappear.

    B. Click on the file you want to delete. Go to the menu bar and choose delete. Answer the prompt "Y" or "N."

    C. To delete files without using the recyle bin hold shift-key and press the delete key or right click and choose delete.

7. How do you lock (protect a file from being erased or changed) or unlock a file?

    A. To protect your files by assigning a screen-save password. Open Display properties in the Control Panel. On the Screen Saver tab, in the Screen Saver list, click the screen saver you want to use. Select the Password protected check box, and then click Change. Type your password, and then confirm the password by typing it again.

    B. Another way to open the Control Panel is to click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. If you do not see the item you want, click view all Control Panel options. Selecting the Password protected check box locks your computer when the screen saver is activated. When you begin using your computer again, you are prompted to type your password to clear the screen saver.

    C. Protecting shared resources. Sharing files among computers is one of the primary benefits of having a home network. With file sharing, you can make some or all of the files on a computer available to the other computers on the network. However, if your network has a connection to the Internet, you should take extra steps to protect shared resources. One way to do this is to assign a password to each of the folders and drives you share. With passwords, only people who have the password will be able to gain access to your folders and drives.

8. How do you verify a disk (i.e., check to see if it is OK or not damaged)?

    A. Using ScanDisk to check your hard disk for errors. You can use Scan Disk to check your hard disk for logical and physical errors. ScanDisk can then repair the damaged area. You can also start Scan Disk by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking ScanDisk.

    B. To check your disk surface, files, and folders for errors Start ScanDisk/Click the drive you wannt to check./Under Type of test, click Thorough./ Click Start. You can also start ScanDisk by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking ScanDisk. To change the settings ScanDisk uses when checking the disk surface, after step 3, click Options. Or, to change the settings ScanDisk uses when checking files and folder, click Advanced. To specify how ScanDisk repairs the errors it finds, clear the Automatically fix errors check box. For Help on an item in ScanDisk, right-click the item, and then click What's This?

    C. To check for disk errors when your computer starts. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Start Up, and then right-click ScanDisk./Click Properties./On the Shortcut tab, type one or more of the following after the text that appears in the Target box. To do this Type this Specify the drive you want to check. s: (where x is the drive letter)/Check all your local hard disks./a/Start and quit ScanDisk automatically. /n/Prevent ScanDisk from correcting any errors it finds/p/ If you do not have ScanDisk in your StartUp folder, click Related Topics below. To check drive D and start and quit ScanDisk automatically, type the following in the Target box: C:\windows\scandskw.exe d:/n To check all hard disks but prevent ScanDisk from correcting any erros it finds, type: c:\windows\scandskw.exe/a/p/

9. How do you create a subdirectory or a folder within a folder?

    A. Go to the file menu on the tool bar and choose new folder. Click on it. Give it a name. You have a new sub directory.

    B. To create a folder on the Desktop, double-click My computer./Click the drive or folder in which you want to create a new folder./On the File menu, point to New, and then click Fodler./ Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER./ You can also create a new folder by right-clicking a blank area in the right pane of Widnows Explorer or a blank area on the desktop, pointing to New, and then clicking Folder.
    C. To organize your favorite pages into folder. As your list of favorite pages grows, you can keep it organized by creating fodler. You might want to organize your pages by topic. For example, you could create a folder named ARt for storing information about art exhibits and reviews. On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites. Click Create folder, type a name for the fodler, and then press ENTER./ Drag the shortcuts (or folders) in the list to the appropriate folders./ If the number of shortcuts or folders makes dragging impractical, you can use the Move to Folder button instead.

10. How much storage space (number of kilobytes or megabytes) is there on the type of disc you are using (specify the type of disc: 3 1/2 floppy, Zip, Jazz, etc.)?
