Week of May 5, 2004
"Go get it, Daddy!"
"We had a special treat, Noah. We had ice cream, it was good."
"Vitamin!"
"I want chocolate cookie/valentine/easter candy/cake" (sigh)
"I play all day with Maya/Dominic"
"I want X. No, I don't want X. Yes, I want X"
"I pee, Daddy pees, Mummy pees, Maggie pees, we all pee"
"I want a stroller ride!"
"I want river park!"
"Bertucci's? That's a good idea!"
"Wiggles in car, I want Wiggles in car"
"Where are we going? No, I don't want to go that way" (i.e., I know you're driving to get me to nap, I don't want to go)
We tell him we can go for a walk when I'm done with my coffee. He runs over and looks in the cup. "Is it empty? All done?"
When he's tired, "I want to go back home"
"You have blue jeans!" when Daddy got some in the mail. "I want package!"
"My hands are sticky"
"I want to read grumpy frog"
The house is empty, for the most part, of all the Easter treats. The dyed eggs which were so lovely, were tossed uneaten. Scott's cholesterol is too high to eat them, Owen squished the one we gave him, and I, well, I don't like hard boiled eggs that much.Owen is still antsy for chocolate. It was hard to give up the Valentine hearts, and it's been equally hard to give up the M&M's and easter eggs. Thank goodness we gave him as little as we did. He's also unhappy because the Birthday cake and birthday indulgences have also vanished. Suddenly, there's just regular food. We have a few gummy items kicking around because, after all, how many sour gummies can you eat at a time? Those are handy for giving medicine, as an after-the-fact bribe. Owen's actually very good about taking his medicine most of the time, and is so good to deal with, it's actually an after thought to reward him and get him something that will erase the taste.
We're just so grateful he loves things that are good for him, too. We were visiting a friend with a cantaloupe/cucumber candle, and it smelled surprisingly good. We held it out for Owen to smell and he just pressed his face into the glass as far as it could go. When he was an infant he loved the smell of cantaloupe, and early on would open his mouth even though he had no teeth with which to chew. Cute to see a gut reaction like that, and his love of cantaloupe endures.
As a way to celebrate the season (and of course, create another vice), we went out for the season's first soft serve ice cream cone. Well, we got Owen a dish, but he took over my vanilla cone and made it his. Now we know the answer to that burning question, "will Owen eat an ice cream cone?" I assume parents like dishes because they're neater. Owen is a bit scary, he was directing my hand with both of his own hands as I held the cone, but until the last inch of the cone, there was barely a drip anywhere. The last inch is tough for everyone. He's always been a tidy critter. I just hope we haven't made him Felix Unger, somehow. "My hands are sticky!" as he holds them out to be cleaned.
Owen also peed on the toilet for the first time!
With the potty seat, we've been wondering how peeing while sitting down would work - there seems to be little access to the actual toilet. The answer is: he peed on himself! I don't think it would have been easy to point himself down with his legs squished together, so I think we'll have to revisit letting him use the toilet without the potty seat. Maybe scoot him further back. The first attempt to pee on the toilet, but when he peed on himself was Sunday, 5/2. On Monday, 5/3 he peed in the toilet! Yay. Of course, since then, he hasn't attempted it once, but isn't it nice that he could?
Sources of joy:
- Walking the bleachers near the High School
- Bertucci's
- Ice Cream cone
- Tattoos (one night at dinner, he pressed his dried fruit on to his arms and giggled "tattoo!")
- M&M pancakes (what evil person put this on the kids menu. And what were we thinking to order it? He's so addicted).
- His poor, battered Marshmallow Easter Bunny. "I have pink bunny!"
- Reading "Everyone Poops"
- Getting ink on his finger, and matching it to Mummy's finger with ink. An E.T. moment.
- Observing Clifford. "They're riding bicycles! They're playing ball!"
- Picking out which story he wants on the Clifford DVD, he runs over to the menu, "I want that episode!"
- He's constantly observing now. "I make a mess. I stand on stool. I want tickle! I see bagel and cream cheese"
