Week of January 28, 2004
"I don't want that"Owen is increasingly difficult as he tries to assert his own opinions, without knowing exactly what those opinions are. He tries to choose something (most often a Thomas story) and when we go to follow through on the request, we hear "No, I don't want that." We try hard to be patient and nurturing, when what we really want to say "fine, no TV. In fact, I want to put something I like on for a change." I guess we're fortunate that it's mainly his shows he's persnickety about, and his books. Clothes and food are a matter of indifference. Besides, he can always vote on food by ignoring what he doesn't want to eat.
Whatever.
A new show premiered on Playhouse Disney this week. I'm embarrassed to admit I was counting down to Australia day on January 26, but there you are. My life is full. Each day's announcement, 4 days to the Koala Brothers, 3, 2, 1 had me nervous and excited. I loath their other new show (clowns, shudder), but cute little koalas with the mantra "We're here, to help?" What could be better?
We recorded the first 4 episodes and I couldn't wait to watch them. Owen was caught up in my excitement "Kwala Bros!" and we sat together to watch it. Ah, the opening credits were even better than I could have imagined. "Hey, hey, hey, hey, help is on it's way. Call the Koala Brothers, call the Koala Brothers ." It's dopey, but it's sweet! And Buster and Frank? Ditto.
Owen lost interest of course, but he was captured by the fact the first episode had a scene with cocoa. Out he ran to claim a mug of his own. He trundled back, enjoying the cocoa more than the story. Oh well. I enjoyed the story about Ned being too scared by noises to sleep in his own trailer.
We've also been listening to song number 12 on our Thomas CD, "Every cloud has a silver lining" blah, blah, blah. It's all Song number 12, all the time. Owen gets agitated as it gets close to ending, until we skip back to the start. As soon as we do, he starts to sing, which of course makes us mushy and satisfied with the choice. The song must be pretty innocuous because we're putting up with the fixation with a minimum amount of stress. I don't think Scott even notices his finger snaking out to skip back.
It's continued to be unseasonably cold. Our expectations for winter are pretty low, but it's come to the point where any day above 10 feels viable for outdoor romping and 15 feels balmy. 20's and 30's? Well, when those days return, we'll probably be stripping off our jackets, overheated. Owen's now content to wear his mittens and hat, practicality wins. And his snow fear is overcome as well, replaced by his love of eating snow and making footprints.
