Week of August 25, 2004

I've been writing entries, but I've been terrible about getting them uploaded on to the server. I have the entire summer to add, and each time I start, I get distracted and end up adding pictures instead. You'll notice those are up to date. I apologize for the quantity of photos -- I love my new camera.

I will do my best to update working from May 26, 2004 forward.

Owen's had a great summer, and has blossomed into a little boy. He's much more verbal, although it's mainly with Scott and I of course. One could easily be misled into thinking monosyllables and short sentences are all that he says, but that's because he's shy. His genes doome him, I think, at least for now.

He's starting preschool on August 30, so there are big changes afoot for Owen. I'm hopeful he'll do better with change than I do. Failing that, I hope the bunnies and guinea pigs entice him to give the place a chance.

Our summer adventures have included Catskill Game Farm, a jaunt to the Essex Steam Train, and Mystic Aquarium along with many trips to Look Park and Lupa Zoo. We took him to the beach only once, but we've been inhibited by his complete disinterest in water. I'm not sure he's even very interested in sand. I thought he would be a waterbaby, as I was, but so far the bathtub provides all the water experience he really wants to have. I don't want to push him to do something he doesn't want to do, but I'm eager for him to experience the joy water can bring. Oh well, maybe next year.

Strangely, our boy who lived for the outdoors, has become a homebody of late. It's hard to pry him away from his trains and get him outside, which is in stark contrast to his first three years! This is the boy for whom going to the park three times a day was just about right. It's a very strange phase for us, trying to coax him into outings. All things considered, he'd rather play or curl up with Clifford or Kipper. We suspect this will change as the weather gets cooler and more inclement. None of us are fans of the heat, and Owen is outside most days when he's at daycare so he's doing plenty of romping. When he's outside less during the day, he may be more interested in us taking him out to play.

His devotion to Thomas is as keen as ever. Vivian gave Owen a small backpack for his birthday in June, and that comes with us with a selection of favorite trains and books whenever we go out. We have a layout permanently on display in the living room, for all of us to trip over. Fortunately, Owen is dextrous and nimble. I do wonder if our cluttered apartment will lead him someday to a home furnished in a Japanese Minimalist style. Will he fight his packrat genes?

At 24 month Appt:

32 lbs 6 oz and 35.5 inches (~90%/75%)

Measured in early November, he's 37+ inches.

At urgent care on 1/5/04. ~ 30 months
34 lbs 10 oz and we think he's about 38.5 inches tall
We think he's hovering around 90% for height and weight.

At Dr. with Croup in March, ~ 33 months:
35 lbs, 14 oz., but he seems thinner. No idea what his height is, he won't stand still when I measure him!
Perhaps around 39 inches?

At 36 month Appt::
40 lbs, 39 inches (~97%/83%)
Owen graduated to the ruler on the door and a bar scale!
