Mobile at last!

Week of April 1st, 2002

Owen started crawling on Friday, March 22nd, and he's thrilled. For the first time, he has some measure of control over what he sees and does. He's been exploring the apartment, with special attention to the areas where he keeps getting picked up. We thought redirecting him would reset what he's focused on, but it's just temporary. Before long he's back trying to pull Noah's hair, or find out what's in the smelly box in the bathroom. Perhaps our picking him up just adds to the allure of those forbidden corners. We spend a lot of time picking him up.

Our gates are ordered, I hope they come in soon. We follow him around constantly, but I think it's inevitable that our attention will wander eventually, or he'll pick up speed. I was hoping he'd be a Lee, and crawl and walk late, but I guess he's taking after Scott. No wonder everyone gets wistful about that short time when they sit up well, and stay where you put them...he mastered sitting up just before Christmas, and the past 3 months have zoomed by.

Our apartment is so much cleaner than we're used to. Every bit of drek goes right into Owen's mouth, so the incentive is at last large enough to get us to act. Out comes the vacuum twice a week (rather than waiting until the cat hair is so bad even we can't stand it -- twice a week is often, by our old standards).

Do other babies spend so much time playing with their tongues? At first I thought it would be a rare thing, to catch him with his tongue out, grinning. Now I'm starting to worry that it will be the tongueless photos that will be rare. Still, we have a good time sticking our tongues out at one another...
