12 November 2009

Prof. Stephen Hixson will be running the course during Friday 13 Nov 2009 to Friday 20 Nov 2009. Prelecture material has been posted, but you would be well advised to keep up with material presented. Questions may be directed to him if really important.

Quiz 5 will be in class on Wednesday 18 Nov 2009. You should plan to be in class on time. You should prepare a synthetic reactions guide ("recipes") for reactions that have been covered in the lectures (see the lecture notes). The material to be covered will be Alkynes (Ch 8), Organohalides (Ch 10), and portions of Chapter 11 that involve nucleophilic substitution. As usual, the lecture material for these contains the major points that you should understand in order to be prepared.

A tentative study guide for Exam 3 has been posted. This will be what you should follow, unless revision is announced. I am posting this a bit early, so you can more easily plan.

Note from the above study guide that the course syllabus has been revised. We will not cover Chapter 18 this year, and less of Chapter 17 will be covered than originally planned. This is necessary to give less hasty coverage of spectroscopy for Exam 4.

Remember, as we continue to study organic reactions, you should be preparing your own "recipe guides" (reaction summaries). I gave you an example of such for Exam 2, and I hope you found that one useful.

The final exam for this course has been set for Monday 14 Dec 2009 at 10:30 AM -- 12:30 PM at Totman Gym.
