2 Essay Questions: (35 points apiece)
With explicit reference to the readings, lectures, and any relevant films, answer two of the following questions. Do not use the same work/author for both
answers.
1) What is the significance of the Ringstraße for Austrian culture in the latter
half of the 19th century? What values does it represent? What changes in the
socio-political situation does it embody?
2) Briefly trace the spread of anti-Semitism in turn-of-the-century Viennese
culture and describe how it is represented in one of the works we have treated
this semester (texts, film).
3) What were the main elements of Freud’s theory of hysteria and his Interpretation
of Dreams? How does the case of “Dora” fit into this framework?
4) Choose one of the literary texts we read this semester and demonstrate (in
detail) how it embodies the new theories of the psyche or psychoanalysis. (If
you have answered #3, you can refer back to that answer and concentrate more
on the text or compare one text to another or to a musical/art work.)
5) Analyse and compare the depiction of homosexuality in two works we have read/seen
this semester.
6) Compare the depiction of the military and its role in Austrian society referring
to two works we have read/seen this semester.
7) Analyze the depiction of Italy/Italian men and Slavic women in Musil’s Young Törless.Is Musil's usage typical of the times?
8) Compare Schnitzler’s text of La Ronde with Ophul’s later film adaptation.
