Aristocratic Cultural Dominance until Latter Half of 19th Century:
Viennese Social Hierarchy until 1860s:
1st Society (1. Gesellschaft): High Aristocracy (Hochadel) = noble before 18th century
Old Aristocracy (Altadel) = noble in/after 18th century
2nd. Society (2. Gesellschaft): New Nobility (Neuadel, Dienstadel, Jungadel: ranks of Freiherr von, Edler von) = those ennobled for service, financial significance, industrial importance —> many Jews in this category but they couldn’t receive heraldry and were subject to taxes and military service.
Citizens (Bürgerschaft): imperial bureaucracy (uniforms, modeled behavior on aristocracy)
Artisans, Petit Bourgeoisie (Spießbürger): shopowners, tradespeople
Servants/ Proletariat
