SurfBike is an absolute blast! It's fun, easy, and it burns lots of calories. I know because I tested it with exercise scientist Dr. Pierre LaGasse, Laval University. We put SurfBike though the paces on the Connecticut River in over ten hours of rigorous tests to evaluate cardiorespiratory response while pedaling at different speeds. We tried all-out prints for 100 meters, more leisurely "endurance" runs of 5 minutes, and then leisurely surfbiking for up to 30 minutes. In this sequence, Dr. LaGasse is sprinting during a 2-minute "all-out" effort; his heart rate (evaluated during the workouts with telemetry) averaged approximately 85% of age-predicted maximum. Young men and women, including highly trained competitive rowers, also achieved high heart rates during different workout regimens. The next series of experiments will evaluate cardiovascular response (including energy expenditure) in men and women of different ages, including seniors. The concept of SurfBike is simple: pedal a bicycle while riding a surfboard! Attaching the bike to the board took about 10 minutes; the bike + 18 foot surfboard (with rudder) weighs less than 25 pounds. How did we begin? We mounted the bike from the dock and begin pedaling. That's all there was to it. We were sad when testing eneded, because this activity was fun and challenging. And it burns lots of calories. Stay tuned for more results.
