Controversy in Mixed Models: Random Effects

Synopsis:

In a simple randomized block mixed model, there is a controversy over how to test random effects when there is a random block by treatment interaction. We introduce this controversy here. Voss (1999) discusses a resolution of the controversy using the idea of a superpopualtion. We describe the background for this debate, but stop short of presenting a superpopulation framework that might resolve the issues.
