Classical Echoes—Epic
Classics 263
UMass Spring '06

A Comparative Essay of approximately 8-10 pages is due in class on Friday May 12. The topic of the essay is as follows:

Drawing on the full range of epics being read in this course, analyze a common device/feature of ancient epic, such as the extended or Homeric simile, the proem, the catalog, the battle scene, the ecphrasis, the council of the gods, the underworld, the hero/protagonist, etc. First define the device or feature which you have chosen, then discuss four examples: one from Homer, one from the Aeneid, one from the Metamorphoses, and one from another work being read in the course. Alternatively, you may substitute one example from an epic text not being read in this course (from, e.g., Dante, Milton, Mahabharata, Joyce’s Ulysses). It may be helpful to choose related examples. Your paper should address the question of how the examples you have chosen are similar and different, while considering how they help to define the work in which they appear as epic and/or how they react against generic conventions. Through careful analysis of the texts, it is possible to write this paper without consultation of secondary sources, but you must include proper citations and append an appropriate bibliography if you choose to consult scholarship. Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. If you have any question about what constitutes academic dishonesty, see pages 28–36 of the Code of Student Conduct 2005–2006, which is available on the website of the Dean of Students.
