2. The Los Angeles Heart Study

An epidemiological study aimed at identifying risk factors for heart disease was conducted on employees of the Los Angeles County. Participants in the prospective study completed a questionnarie in 1950, and again in 1962 (if they survived and were able to be contacted. Survival status follow-up on the subjects continued to 1968. Data from this study is discussed by Afifi, A.A. and Azen, S. P. (1972) in a text, "Statistical Analysis: A Computer Oriented Approach." Research questions in the study related to the distribution of factors (such as blood pressure) among subjects who survived to 1968.

Data from the study is contained in the UMASS OIT data set (Los Angeles Heart Data, with the codebook also given). An illustration of a SAS program to read a portion of the data (saved from the WEB) into SAS is given by lec6p1.sas.
