Lecture 1

1. Overview of Course

Scope of the Course

1. Manage data for research studies (unique, limited duration)
- i. Experimental studies involving large numbers of subjects
- ii. Surveys with sampling/non-response.
- iii. Multi-faceted longitudinal studies
- iv. Observational case/control studies with possible follow-up
2. Use computing tools to understand statistics, and perform complex analyses
- i. Random number generators
- ii. Simulations
- iii. Special computer intensive statistics

Note: We do not discuss management of account files, inventories, banking, purchasing, tele-marketing, search and retrieval applications, multiple user data bases. We do not discuss statistical theory- just ideas.

Course Expectations

1. Class participation, group dynamics

3. Complete satisfactory a project and Final Take home exam

Computers

Learning Objectives

Complete Background Survey
Enable successfull log onto the SPH&HS or OIT Micro Computers
Use WINdows to open and shrink ICONS, use the Mouse to open and resize windows, move between windows, and move from one open application to another
Start SAS 6.12 in Windows, and identify the four principal Windows in SAS, save the contents in a Window, and end your SAS session
Start WordPerfect or MS-WORD in Windows, change fonts, copy SAS output to the Wordprocessor, save a file, print a file, and copy a file to a floppy disk.
Distinguish between operating systems (Windows 95/NT) and software programs (SAS, Wordprocessors).
