Computing: Using the School of Public Health and Health Sciences Computer Lab

Computers:

All students will be expected to use micro computers. Use of micro-computers is an important aspect of this course. We will make extensive use of SAS, HOMEPAGE, and EpiInfo in this course. Computer access and all software is available on the School of Public Health Computer Lab, or software may be purchased for home use. In addition, most of the software used is available on other University Computer Labs across campus.

Computer Use/Access- EMail:

All students must obtain a PPP account from OIT and establish an Email address for this course. You may wish to obtain an Email address from other (free) sources (ie. Yahoo). This account will enable OIT computer lab use and use of computers in the School of Public Health Micro Computer Resources rooms (Arnold 413 and 417). Hours for OIT labs are posted in the labs. The SPH&HS Computer lab is restricted for use by students taking graduate level courses in the SPH&HS. Hours for the SPH lab in Arnold are normal building hours with the room lock combination provided in the course. Evening and weekend access to micro computers in Arnold House is possible with the purchase of an Arnold Building key.

Obtaining an Arnold Building Key

Arnold House is accessible from 8-5, Monday through Friday. To ccess the building in the evenings or on weekends, a key is needed. After hour access to Arnold is provided by obtaining an "intellikey" for the southwest 1st floor door. Intellikeys are programmed for 1 year access time (From Sept. 1 to Aug. 31) for grduate students in the SPH&HS, or students taking a graduate level course in the school. To obtain an "intellikey" for Arnold, there is a $26 charge, with $20 of this charge refunded upon return of the key within 1 month of the key's access time period expiration. To obtain a key, you need to sign up with Elaine Fuqua in Arnold 408 by giving her a check payable to the University of Massachusetts for $26.

Software Purchase

This course will make extensive use of SAS and EpiInfo software.

EpiInfo software is available without charge from the Internet.

Other Software is available from the University Stores.
