MAKEUP EXAMS/GRADE RAISE OPTIONS

Makeup Exam for those who miss either the first or the second regular exam

You should make every effort to take both of the regularly scheduled exams (particularly the first one). However, if you are ill or have a very hectic schedule and miss one of the scheduled exams (either the first or the second), then you must take the relevant makeup exam offered only on April 17th from 7-9 PM. There will be NO OTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR A MAKEUP; THUS, YOU MUST BE THERE. Students who miss both of the regularly scheduled exams are in serious difficulty and must have medical proof that they were unable to attend each of the regularly scheduled exams before being permitted to take any makeups.

Two makeup exams will be given during this makeup period (one to replace the first exam and one to replace the second exam). If you miss a regularly scheduled exam, I will automatically sign you up to take the exam you missed. Each makeup exam will cover exactly the same material as the corresponding regular exam. Please note: if you miss the first exam, you must wait until late in the semester to take a makeup. On the other hand, the final exam is cumulative; thus, taking a makeup on this late date will be useful preparation for the final.

Grade Improvement

Exam performance is influenced by a variety of factors including health, fatigue, and the number of other exams given during exam weeks. To help offset some of these problems, you will have an opportunity to improve your grade on the lower of your two exam scores.

TAKE THE MAKEUP EXAM CORRESPONDING TO YOUR LOWER GRADE ON APRIL 17th (only those who took both of the regularly scheduled exams are eligible)

If you have already taken both regular exams, you can take the appropriate makeup exam, described above, to improve the lower of your two scores. (Thus, if your lower score is on the second exam, you must take a makeup on second exam to improve your grade). Remember the makeups are given only once on April 19th, and you must be available on this evening in order to use this option. Furthermore, you must sign up for this option one week prior to the makeup date. I will remind you in class. Signing up does not commit you to take the makeup exam, it just allows me to make enough copies of each exam for all those who want to take it. The makeup exam will not replace your score; instead, the two scores will be averaged. Thus, you should be well prepared for the makeup to minimize the risk of lowering your score. Students who make a strong effort typically experience some improvement in their grade, and I will be available to help you review this material and provide encouragement.
