Course
Notes Units 4, 5 and 6
a. Create a Code Sheet and a Coding Manual for your revised data collection
form.
-
A code sheet is a blank copy of the data collection form where
the name of each variable or field is written beside the question
on the data collection form. This helps link the field
in the coding manual and database to the data collection form.
- A coding manual (or data dictionary) defines and describes in detail all variables and all possible values and formatting for each of the variables.
b. Create a database
using MS Access for entering the data you collected
from fellow classmates.
Resources
for Learning MS Access
Spend some time working through at least one of the tutorials! -- there are basic level ones for beginners, and special topics for more experienced users. This is part of the assignment -- I'm expecting you to learn how to create tables and forms in MS Access!
- Within your
database, create a TABLE for storing your data.
Make sure the
Field Names and data types you defined on your code sheet and coding
manual are the field names and data types in your table.
(As you design your database, you may choose to edit your data collection form and coding manual to match -- that is fine; I'd rather see you make improvements than stick with previously problematic choices -- just be sure to hand in a copy of your revised data collection form.)
- Create a FORM for data entry from your table.
Design the data entry page to resemble your data collection instrument as well as you can;
match the order and placement of fields on the screen to your paper form; additional text on your paper form can be added as labels on the screen form.
You may choose to add coding instructions on the screen, also.
- Save your access file (.accdb) containing both a table and form.
c. Enter
the data you collected from fellow students and enter data for yourself also using your form for data entry. Save your data.
Hand in:
- A copy of your code sheet and coding manual.
- A printed
copy of your screen Form for data entry (with the form on the screen hit
alt-PRTSCN to copy what is showing on the screen -- then in Word hit Ctrl-V to past the picture into a Word document).
- Comments
on your data collection form, code sheet, coding manual and data entry screen -- what worked well, what if
anything you would do differently in future -- you will be creating another database for your group project. I'm expecting some
thoughtful commentary here!
