Assassins
“Assassins” is a live-action role-playing game. Players try to eliminate each other from the game using mock weapons in an effort to become the last surviving player. Assassin is lifestyle-invading. Game-play occurs at all hours and in all places. Since an elimination attempt could occur at any time, successful players are obligated to develop a healthy degree of watchful paranoia.
Note: This is not Humans versus Zombies…it’s a similar idea, but older and better, and can be played on a smaller scale.
The Rules
Every player is an assassin, and every player is also a target. Eric Abbott will be the moderator and will not be playing. A list will be produced of all original players.
Every member will be assigned a target. Your goal, as an assassin, is to eliminate your target. Once you have eliminated your target, you then get that player’s target. You now have a new target. If you get this second target, you then get that person’s target. You continue until you are the only remaining player (you will know this when your target is yourself), or when you are eliminated. Since you are also a target, you may get eliminated rather than be the winner. Your goal is to eliminate all of your targets without being eliminated by anyone else.
The winner will get some sort of prize at the end of the semester.
Elimination
Once you have your target, you may start the hunt. To eliminate your target, you must either:
- shoot him/her with a rubber band (no face shots), or
- “hit” (tap) him/her with a spoon (preferably plastic but any will work).
The elimination must not be witnessed by any members of APO. If so, the assassination attempt fails, and you have just revealed your identity. Now you will have to be extra secretive.
Some notes about this:
- Any purposeful acts of violence (rubber band to the eye, hitting someone hard with a metal ladle, etc) will mean that you, the assassin, are disqualified.
- Be honest! If there is serious discrepancy, you both may be removed from the game.
- To play right, you should keep a rubber band and/or spoon on you at all times.
- The rubber band must be shot at the person, and the spoon must be in your hand (not thrown, etc).
- If after some time Eric notices that you have done nothing towards attacking your target—including not attending events, or taking no shots, or something else—he may use his powers of God and eliminate you himself. This is especially important for alumni who are playing.
Safety Zones
There are certain places where Assassins cannot be played:
- During someone’s class/lab/etc.
- Religious services.
- While someone is working at a job.
- Inside the office.
- In the target’s bedroom.
- In the assassin’s bedroom.
- In any and all bathrooms.
- On a service project, while the group is actually doing work (to and from is ok, breaks are not).
- During any serious APO moment (inductions would be an example of this).
- During designated big/little hours.
- If any more come up, we will tell you.
- During a meeting (from the time the meeting is called to order to when it is dismissed). This includes regular meetings, E-Board, pledge, nom-com, and any other meetings.
Playing
- You will receive a letter with your initial target.
- The game will start on Monday, October 13th, at 12pm (noon).
- If you don’t receive your target by that time, email Eric so that he can email your letter.
- You must announce your elimination to Eric (both the "killer" and the "dead guy")
Some last notes:
- Being secretive is good—if you tell everyone who your target is, your target will find out.
- That being said, sometimes alliances are good…but not always.
- Staying in groups can be beneficial.
- Remember, you’re an assassin! Use spy techniques, trickery, etc.
- Always watch your back.
- Eric is acting as “God,” so make sure that you follow the rules and play nice, or you may feel his wrath.
- As the game progresses, new rules might develop, or current rules might be removed.
And…
- Remember that this is a fellowship activity, which means…have fun! If you’re not having fun, you’re not playing it right. Please don’t take it too seriously.
Good luck assassins!
