| OVERVIEW Across the Pacific horizon is a world of people and cultures which are increasingly interconnected to Main Street U.S.A. This program will provide the opportunity for undergraduates from any major to experience those cultures and explore some of the forces which are creating these dynamic links to the U.S. The Study Abroad in Southeast Asia (SASA) program is the result of an agreement between the Cultural Center, University of Philippines Mindanao (UPM) and UMass Amherst. The University of the Philippines is one of the oldest and most prestigious of the universities in the Philippines. The Mindanao campus opened in l994 to serve the rapidly growing economy and culturally diverse areas of Mindanao in the south. Its faculty include many trained in the U.S., Australia and Canada and faculty from the other UP campuses frequently teach at the new Davao campus. |

LOCATION: UPM has two campuses; one in downtown Davao City and a second on a 500 ha site 30 minutes outside the city in Mintal. With a population of over 1 million Davao City is the largest city in Mindanao, a main port and center for agribusiness, and one of the countries first class international tourist destinations. The Mintal campus offers a new multi-purpose athletic facility, cultural center, research and teaching labs, and library, dormitories and on-line computer laboratory. Students will live in Davao City at the International Residency on the campus of the Davao Medical College. |

| CURRICULUM of the SASA program will be under the direct supervision of two UMA faculty. It will include four course units on regional culture and history, development and environment, theory & practice in community development and a 3-6 credit practicum or research with a NGO on local projects. Field trips to villages, agribusiness centers, ethnic communities. It will offer some local language training, but all instruction will be in English LENGTH OF STUDY: The SASA Program will follow the UMass Amherst academic calendar. Classes begin on Feb 1 and end the second week of May. A two-week mid-term break may be used for individual travel or sightseeing. ELIGIBILITY: The SASA Program is open to regularly enrolled student at UMass Amherst, the Five Colleges, or others within the UMass state system. Others may apply. All applicants should have a good academic average (+2.8) and show evidence of maturity, stability, be adaptable to a non-Western cultural environment, self-discipline and be strongly motivated. Interviews will be required in addition to other application materials. COST: The following are the estimated costs for this one semester program. Program Fee (including room, board, books, incidentals UMA in-state....... $5,000.00 UMA out-of-state $6,500.00 Non UMA........... $7,500.00 Participating students will pay their own international travel (round trip), passport/visa fee, and incidental personal costs ESTIMATED at $1,500.00. All students are required to arrange for international health insurance coverage. FINANCIAL AID: If you already receive financial aid to attend UMA you can use your financial aid for your student abroad period.
