What is WebCT?

WebCT (Web Course Tools) is an integrated set of tools for developing and delivering courses or course components over the Web. It was originally developed at the University of British Columbia and is presently being used by universities and colleges all over the world.

If you are reading this, then you are most likely already using WebCT. Some of the WebCT tools used to support online learning include:

  • Homepages
  • Discussions
  • E-mail
  • Chat
  • Glossary
  • Calendar
  • Quiz

WebCT provides the tools to present online learning in a variety of ways. This can range from structured learning pathways to dynamic, interactive virtual classrooms. How a course is presented online depends on the content and complexity of the learning material, and the delivery methodology use by the instructor. With each module studied, WebCT will become a more familiar and welcoming learning environment.

Eventually, WebCT will simply become another tool used to support learning. As with any classroom, it is a changing environment; expect each module to apply different tools and techniques. Join in, ask questions, and participate as you would in any classroom.
