How to use this site:
Quite simply, you must do the following to make a website:
- create a new page
- preview the page
- upload the data to your oitunix account
- To create a new web page, click on the link in the toolbar. When
the form comes up on the screen, fill in the appropriate information.
(See tips below.)
Text boxes:
- Keep in mind that while the text fields may be relatively long,
you should try to limit them to what the reader can see quickly.
Too much text is boggling.
- The header is optional. However it is recommended, as it serves as a
headline to your text and is very useful to those not so familiar with your
page as you will be.
- Tabs are not understood by the web browser. Use double spacing between
paragraphs for clarity.
Linking:
- type only the URL after http:// (this part is included in the
form script).
- you can link to additional pages you create here, by typing in the
full URL (everything after http://).
For example, in Chris’ Home Page (index.HTML), type in a link for
"research" as www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~chris/research.HTML. The pages
will then be linked.
- At any point in the process, you can see the page you have so far by
clicking any of the "preview" buttons. When in "preview" mode click
on the back button of your browser to return to the form you are
editing.
- When you are satisfied, make the web page available to the world by
uploading the page to the oitunix web server (where you have your
account). To do this, click on any of the "preview" buttons. Scroll to
the end of your page and follow the instructions for uploading. You
will fill in a form with your
- username,
- password,
- directory location (use public_html unless instructed otherwise),
- the name of the file (use index.html for your main page), and
- the name of the file for future editing purposes (use restore.dat for
your main page)
- !Remember the file names you give, as you will need them to edit your
page later on. The window for restoring data does not have a browse function!
- To add additional web pages to your homepage click, on "Add a
page" in the toolbar. Follow the same steps as above, filling in the
form as appropriate. When you upload however, be sure to save the file
under a different name, presumably relevant to the page’s topic.
The corollary to that is to be sure to save a file to restore with a
different name. Otherwise, you will be saving the new page on
top of the original home page.
Linking:
- you should link back to your home page from here, by typing in the
full URL (after http://).
For example, in Chris’ Research (research.html), type in a link for
"home" as www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~chris/index.html. The pages will then
be linked.
- To edit a page you have already produced and uploaded, you will
restore data. Click on "Edit page in form." This will bring
up a window which requests data to be restored. You will need to
enter the same information as in the uploading window, so be sure
to have your username, password, and file names available.
- The link "Edit HTML of page" allows you to edit the straight html.
Also, you may want to edit the page further using an html editor such
as HomePage on the PC or Mac, or using a simple text editor on your
oitunix account.
Final Tips:
- It is advised to use a light background with dark text for easier
reading and printing.
- There is an option to saving the page with a title, for which the
default is "yes." This will allow the page to be found by search engines
and will give the page a name when saved as a bookmark.
- You may consider uploading often, as it serves as a kind of "save"
that is not possible for your form information on the browser. Just be
sure to restore the file and work from there, not from a new file (see
restoring data).
