UMass Women’s Hockey Introduces Their Roster & Begins Their Season

After a week with three captain’s practices, an office session, and a Gillette
fundraiser the girls were ready to step on the ice for tryouts. Coach Cobb and
his assistants had a difficult time narrowing down the team, but are completely
satisfied with the final twenty-five girls! The team consists of 12 veterans,
and 13 first year players-22 hard working skaters, and three determined goalies.
After tryouts adjourned the girls were supplied with Harrow sports gear,
including new bags, back packs, sticks and gloves adorned with the UMass logo
and Sam the Minuteman. The next week the girls jumped straight into boot camp
with 6 am practices every day. “It was a great start to the season, and proved
that everyone on the team is ready to work hard,” says Gabby Busa, the sophomore
goalie. Working hard is one of the key elements that Coach Cobb seeks in his
team; in fact the captains have made this the theme for the season, using the
motto “Do Work” to keep the team motivated. The team even has a construction
hard hat, which is given to the hardest working player after a practice or a
game recognizing their effort and encouraging the rest of the team to ‘do work’.
The team also emphasizes team bonding, by playing games, and planning physical
activities, like hiking in Sunderland. The coaches and captains believe that by
emphasizes hard work, and having a tight knit team, they will ultimately make
their goals of becoming regional and national champions. The girls are excited
to begin the season with their first game on October 24th, against Holy Cross in
Worchester. In closing, Haley Kuhn, a member of the team for 4 years, and the
senior head captain remarked, “I think we have a talented group of girls this
year, and more importantly, a group of girls that will never stop working. We
have a young team this year, with the addition of 13 awesome new players; but
with a great mix of new players and returning players, I think we have a very
special, tight knit group of girls. We have a hard schedule ahead of us, and
with time and a lot of hard work, I think that this is the group to win a
National Championship. The first few weeks of the season have been great so
far, and we will keep practicing at a high intensity, fine-tune our systems, and
"DO WORK!”

2009-2010 Schedule Released

The 2009-2010 regular season schedule has been released today. Highlighting this season are games against NCAA DIII power Holy Cross and Nichols College, four games each against league rivals Penn State and URI, four games each against ACHA new comers Vermont and Northeastern and a visit to UMass by two time defending National Champion Lindenwood University who beat UMass last season in triple overtime at the National Tournament. The Women play 30 regular season games, with the possibility of playing 32 if they make the ECWHL playoffs and 37 if they make nationals and advance all the way to Championship Sunday. Coach Cobb said the Women cannot wait to get the upcoming season underway: “we are starting the season two weeks later this year and we have added more games because I feel with having potentially 14 first year players that playing more games in a shorter season will make every game more intense and give the girls a chance to go out there and get better at what they love to do which is playing hockey games!” Although the Women lost nine players from last year’s team they have eight recruits coming in and at least another seven players that will be trying to walk on. It is shaping up to be another great winter of Women’s hockey in Amherst.

Massachusetts women’s ice hockey coach Chris Cobb was recently selected to be one of five coaches on the newly formed American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Leadership Committee, which will head up the ACHA Women’s Division National Select Team.

The National Select team will be in its inaugural season this upcoming year and the first tryouts will take place from July 22-26 at the University of Rhode Island. The Leadership Committee will run the tryout camp and select the team. The team will travel to Geneva, Switzerland, Chamonix and Méribel, France for a series of international competitions in early spring of 2010.

Cobb has led the women’s ice hockey team to their two most successful seasons in the ACHA in his first two years as Head Coach. He also serves on the national ACHA ranking committee and competition committee.

Memebers of the Massachusetts Women’s hockey Team attending the camp are sophomore Paige Hackett and freshmen Brittany Resendes, Stephanie Schlosky, Katie Avery and Amy Cushing.
