Special Fonts

Old English uses several special characters that are not found in all computer fonts.

Earlier versions of the most popular web browsers used to handle these characters with no difficulty.

Unfortunately, for reasons best known to themselves, both Netscape and Microsoft changed the character encoding in their 4.x browsers for Macintosh.

To solve this problem, we have created a font, Wessex, that makes the encoding for the characters thorn and eth consistent for all major browsers and platforms.

You will need to install this font on your computer in order to see thorn and eth in King Alfred's Grammar and in the King Alfred program.
