WEEK 15 Wrap-up

    T 12 Dec

    • Wrap-up
    • Paper due 15 December by 4:00 pm in my mailbox.

Final Paper. 5 pages. You have been challenged to integrate your education and college experience at UMass in this one course. That's why it's called an "integrative experience" course. Can it be done? Can you transcend an experience while having it? Can you hack it?

What are you talking about? Imagine trying to get on Storrow Drive at 5pm on a Friday. The roads and traffic constitute a system. You are free to move within that system. At the same time, you feel the need to get free of all constraints, to go off-roading on the Bonneville Salt Flats, to drive as fast as you want in any direction. A college education requires courses (like a race course, or a course of study) that constrain you as they teach. That's like traffic and roads. A college education also requires imagination and willpower to determine your own future. That's the Bonneville Salt Flats. How do you balance those competing impulses? And how do systems channel those impulses—rather than traffic systems, consider systems of language, of decoding meaning, of education, and of an education in literature here at UMass?
