NB. Proverbs, songs of wisdom. Ritual.

People in all cultures practice formal rituals of greeting, of conversation, of wooing, of parting, and so forth. What role might these rituals play in ensuring peace and prosperity in a civilization? In the world of Beowulf? And how does the tone and syntax of the poem alert us to ritualized language and behavior?

Consider the narrative of the Wars of the Swedes. Why does the poet tell it now? How does it make us think that the poem has historical depth? How does the past work in this poem?
