SCHEDULE

E 201: Early British Literature

We meet MWF 10:10 – 11:00 in SC W101

The calendar on the right leads you to a detailed schedule. Quizzes and papers are marked in yellow and red. A general overview is below. We will spend one month on Old English and Anglo-Norman, one month on Medieval, and five weeks on Renaissance literature.

Overview of Assignments:

Our aim is to chart historical changes in literary style between the years 600 and 1680. Audiences have particular expectations (of genre, character, themes, setting, etc.) and poets try to meet or surpass them. In any given era, the arts rely on a set of related ideas and themes drawn from wider society, external influences, scientific discoveries, and so on. These ideas and themes motivate artistic styles that appear in literature, painting, fashion, and so forth.

The first style we will examine is the appositive style.
