Research Support:

Research program support since 1972. Current support:

National Science Foundation - Support for research in experimental Low Temperature Physics, primarily in the area of liquid and solid helium. Continuious since 1972. Most recent renewal: 2016; now concluded. COVID had a major impact on the single-iinvestigator research program. It is unlikely that further NSF support will be requested.

CUMIRP (Polmer Science) - Support for the exploration of low temperature techniques to characterize surface roughness. This support continues with a small balance.

UMass Research Trust Fund. This support continues.

Research Program Profile:

The research group traditionally included 2 - 5 graduate students, often one postdoctoral research associate, occasionally an undergraduate or two and more rarely a high school student. To date 33 graduate students have completed Ph.D. dissertations in the group and 19 postdocs have completed work in the group. Most of the student dissertations have involved research in the general area of liquid helium films, superfluidity, two dimensional phase transitions and solid helium; two have involved superconductivity and two have involved macromolecular adsorption. In 2018 the group was smaller than usual and consisted of one postdoc. COVID then essentially brought the research program to a close.
