QFS98 -- Accommodations:
Comment on Distances: The Campus Center Hotel, the Sylvan dormitory complex, and
the Franklin dining hall are separated by modest distance on the campus. The approximate distances
between these three facilities are: Campus Center Hotel - Franklin Dining = 490 meters;
Campus Center Hotel - Sylvan dormitory = 740 meters; Sylvan dormitory - Franklin
Dining = 940 meters. A shuttle bus will be available beginning at 7:00 each day to
transport those who prefer not to walk. The bus will depart the dorm, and arrive at the
Franklin dinning commons a few mintues later. The bus will continue on to a stop near to the Campus Center, and then
return to the dorm for another departure to the Franklin commons. The bus will depart approximately every 20 minutes from
the dorm. The last departure will be at 8:40.
Dormitory housing (740 meters to conference site, 940 meters to Franklin Dining Hall)
in Cashen dormitory in the Sylvan residence hall system will be available. These dormitory accomodations
are considered to be the mose pleasant
of those offered by the University residence halls system. The floor plan
consists of suites of four sleeping rooms (two doubles, two singles)
which share a common living area (or lounge room) and share a common bathroom. Thus, each
suite houses six to eight people. To reach the bathroom from a sleeping
room one does not need to pass through the hallway, only take a few
steps outside the sleeping room, and remain in the suite. The dormitory rooms do not have
telephones, although telephones are located in the lobby of the dormitory building. There are no
television sets in the dormitory rooms.
Prices will be
$25 per night (single room), or $21 each person per night for a shared room,
including linen service. For those staying in dormitories, a free parking
pass for lots near the dorms is available
on request at dormitory check-in. As is specified on the
formal registration form which is now available, full dormitory housing payment must
be made with the payment form by May 8, 1998.
Local hotel accommodations are also
be available for those who prefer. Hotel charges (in the on-campus Campus Center
Hotel) will be
$60 per night for a single room,
$70 per night for a two-bed (or two people) room. These hotel rooms are typical United States
hotel rooms, each with its own bathroom, TV, and phone service. The banquet, dinners, and
the participant lunches will be
held in this Campus Center Hotel building. There will
be no additional local taxes added to the hotel room rates.
Parking is
additional at $3.25 per day in the Campus Parking Garage
(which is a special rate for those who choose to
reside in the Campus Center Hotel). This parking rate must be requested on hotel check-in.
Those who will be staying in the hotel will be required to
pay the first night's room rate as a deposit with the payment form by May 8, 1998. Upon hotel check-in
the hotel will ask for an imprint of your credit card, as is typical in United States hotels. The balance of
the hotel bill will be paid on departure (directly to the hotel).
Both housing options will be available immediately on
arrival for those who have registered (by April 10, 1998) and returned their payment with the
payment form (by May 8, 1998). See on-site check-in for more details.
In addition, small, local, bed and breakfast
facilities, in the style of a New England Inn are available within a few miles, some
located on the local free bus line. Inns are somewhat more
expensive than the Campus Center Hotel. For your convenience the Inns
most convenient to the campus are listed here:
The Black Walnut Inn (a small relatively new Inn in
a newly renovated 1800's house, about one mile north of the campus
on the free bus route);
The Lord Jeffery Inn
(built in 1926 to look like it dates from the early 1800's, about one and one half
miles south of the campus in the center of Amherst, adjacent to
Amherst College, on the free bus route);
the Allen House Victorian Inn, a bit further than
the Lord Jeffery Inn (about two miles south east of campus),
east of the center of Amherst, also on the free bus route.
Full breakfast
in the University dining facilities (Franklin Dining Hall,
490 meters to conference site) and dinner (in the Campus Center building 10th floor) can
be added for an additional modest cost. We anticipate
that most people will elect to dine in the University dining facilities.
Access to the breakfast facilities will be available via
a magnetic card, and access to the dinner facility will be via paper tickets. Each of these
will be provided to you during conference check-in. The breakfast
card will be pre-programmed with iinformation from the meal plan option you
select when you complete the conference registration form (deadline April 10, 1998). As the conference runs from
Tuesday morning until Sunday at noon (6 breakfast times, 5 dinner times), we
are able to offer several options which are repeated
on the internet
registration form which is now available, and was announced by e-mail. We
offer: Plan A - 6 full breakfasts, 4 dinners ($61). There is
also the
separate conference banquet one evening ($35, including all beverages). Thus, choice
of Plan A plus the
banquet gives you full meal service for the entire conference. Plan B - 6 full
breakfasts, 3 dinners ($55.50) (which gives you one night "on the town" for area
restaurant dining),
Plan C - 0 breakfasts, 4 dinners ($33.25), or Plan D - 0 breakfasts, 3 dinners ($25).
Lunch for participants will be on-site at
the conference, and the cost will be
included in the registration fee. For those who
prefer to have dinner in downtown Amherst, or elsewhere
in the area, a list of local restaurants will be provided (including some personal commentary
on previous experience at some of these local restaurants). Note that there is no meal plan for Monday June 8th,
but there will be a reception from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM which will
include reasonable light food, and
liquid refreshments. The reception will be located on the 16th floor of the Lederle Graduate Research Center.
Refreshments will be provided at
coffee breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. In addition, refreshments
will be available
in the evenings at the poster sessions.
A reception will be held on
the evening of June 8, beginning at 7:00 PM. A banquet
will be held Friday evening, June 12th. A paper ticket which incidates your meal selection choice will be
included in your registration packet.
