Instructions for speakers and poster presenters

Information for poster presenters
Poster dimensions: The maximum poster dimensions are be 36 inches x 48 inches, or approximately 91 cm x 121 cm. Posters may be of any size up to the maximum of 36 inches x 48 inches. You may choose to display your poster either way (portrait or landscape).

Poster set-up: Each poster will be on an individual poster-board backing on an easel. Posters will be secured to the board using either tape or tacks, both of which we will provide. To give you a chance to set-up, easels and set-up materials will be in place between 3:30 and 5:30 before each poster session.

Information for speakers
Speakers who will be providing hand-outs (which we encourage even if slides will be used in the presentation) should bring at least 80 handouts if presenting during a parallel session, and 120 handouts if presenting during a single session. Photocopy services are available on campus on Friday, as well as in Amherst and Northampton, but we strongly encourage speakers to come to the conference with handouts already photocopied. Speakers should also present themselves to their chair during the pre-session break.

The following audio-visual equipment will be available in both auditoriums:

  • a microphone
  • an overhead slide projector
  • a data projector connected to a computer (see 1)
  • loudspeakers for presentation of audio material (see 2)

(1) Each data projector will be connected to an Apple iBook with the most recent versions of Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

Using our computers:
You can use our computers for your presentation - in fact we recommend it - just bring your presentation, preferably as pdf file with all fonts embedded, on a USB memory stick or a CD. If you have your presentation on a floppy disk, please get in touch with us well ahead of time, so we can arrange for it to be transferred to a USB memory stick.

Using your computer:
If you wish to use your own laptop, you can connect it to the data projector. However please keep in mind that any time spent on setup will reduce the time for your presentation! We also recommend that you bring a backup copy on USB memory stick or CD in case setup problems arise. (Don't forget to test your backup copy!)

(2) If you want to use audio material that is not part of a computer based presentation, please let us know well ahead of time which media you are planning to use (CD, DVD, Audio Cassette, etc.).

Proceedings
Since NELS 11, the NELS proceedings have been published by the Graduate Linguistics Student Association (GLSA) at UMass Amherst. Recently, GLSA Publications have switched to a print-on-demand set-up: NELS34 and soon 35 are available in book format from BookSurge, and NELS36 will be as well.
