Language is a uniquely human instinct. It is also our most important
cultural artifact. This course examines language as an instinct and as a
social construct that dynamically shapes and is shaped by history, class,
status, ethnicity, gender, and institutions like the media and the law.

Discussion Section 7 (Class Number: 12359) Mo 11:15am - 12:05pm.
Discussion Section 6 (Class Number: 12341) Mo 1:25pm - 2:15pm.
Mo 9-10, 11:15-12:05 and by appointment. My office is 305 South College.
South College is the red brick building next to the Du Bois Library tower.
The course syllabus will be distributed on the first day.
