About Us

The UMass Dorset Sheep Group is an organization which allows students to manage, care for, and show UMass’ flock of registered Dorset Sheep. We currently have approximately 50 ewes, two breeding rams, and a number of fall lambs. The group is responsible for hoof care, vaccinations, breeding maintenance, and neonatal care during the two lambing seasons (fall and spring). The group is offered as a credited course through the Animal Science department, and allows students the opportunity to develop their ovine management skills.



Scrapie Flock Certification Program

The UMass Dorset Sheep flock is an enrolled flock in the Complete Monitored Scrapie Flock Certification Program.
