Author's Statement |
|
This work was completed while Lynn
Stephens was a graduate student in the Master
of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Empire
State College, State University of New York. Her B.
S. is in physics.
The MALS program at ESC is an interdisciplinary
program designed to appeal to the adult, returning student.
The focus of my degree program has been the nature of time.
This has spanned disciplines from physics to philosophy to
geometric calculus and the visual representation of higher-dimensional
systems. Along the way, I have developed an interest in epistemology
and physics education research. |
This work is part of a long standing personal
exploration of alternative models of physical reality, especially
those including multiple time-like dimensions. I am hoping
for a career change that will bring my work life closer to
this area of human inquiry. As someone with a broad range
of interests (including a passionate avocation in improvisational
dance), and a penchant for finding visual and verbal representations
for abstract mathematical concepts, I am drawn to the essentially
interdisciplinary field of physics education research. I would
like to work in the development of interactive visual tools
for the student of mathematics and physical theory.

A forthcoming paper on this tool.
I have also developed an art project, Seeing Symmetry, that
relates mathematical expressions of symmetry to visual representations.
A portion of this hands-on project, originally designed to appeal
to the educated adult layperson, has been presented to a fourth
grade class where it was enthusiastically received. Feedback
from the teacher and students indicates that much of the enthusiasm
and information has remained with the students well after the
presentation. For more information, contact me. |

Special thanks to ESC faculty members
John Locke and Mark Reynolds for advice and feedback on the construction
of this site.
The interactive
graphs were created in Pacific
Tech's Graphing Calculator 3.0. Microsoft Word was used to create
the annotation and the GIFs. The site composition was started in
Netscape Composer and finished in Dreamweaver. (Now there's a tale).
It has been previewed in Internet Explorer 5.2 and 6, Netscape Navigator
4.7 and 7.1, Mozilla Navigator 0.6, Mozilla 1.5, Safari1.0.1.
