New Approaches to the Study of History: The Case of the Scopes Trial

 

ASSIGNMENT #1: INTERNET SOURCES EXERCISE

TO DISCUSS IN SECTION ON SEPTEMBER 7

 

1. Find a source on the web that deals with some aspect of the Scopes trial.

 

2. Write a paragraph or two and post to Spark (by midnight on Thursday, September 6), making sure to address the following questions:

A) What is the web address and the title of the page?

 

B) How did you find the source?

 

C) Why did you choose this particular source?

 

D) Is it possible to determine who produced the content and what their qualifications are? (If so, provide this information.)

 

E) Is it possible to determine what sources the author of the site used? (If so, provide a general sense of what kinds of sources they are.)

 

F) What are the uses and limits of this web source? What do you learn about the Scopes trial from it? Do you learn about anything else? How reliable is the source?

 

G) Would you include your source on a list of the top ten websites on the Scopes Trial?

 

3. Bring a copy of your comments and at least the first page of the web source to section on Friday for discussion.
